I’m really looking forward to this exhibition at Somerset House, which opens in a few weeks’ time. Stanley Spencer is one of those artists of the early 20th century who managed to capture Britishness in a completely unique way. There is so much detail in his paintings that I can’t help but stare, rapt, for minutes at a time whenever I see them on display. They are subversive and intelligent and witty and thought provoking, and really quite extraordinary. Just the thing to brighten a winter afternoon. – Rachel
