One of my favourite museums in New York is the Museum of Chinese in America. It doesn’t appear on most tourist itineraries of the city, but it certainly should, as it offers a completely different view of America and New York to the one you will find in the more established museums, which largely document the experiences of white, western immigrants to the USA. I knew nothing about the history of Chinese immigration or about their culture and communities before I visited. I was surprised to find a fascinating, thought provoking and moving series of displays that genuinely opened my eyes and gave me a new perspective on the city I had come to call my home. If you find yourself in Chinatown with a little time to spare, I strongly encourage you to pop in. – Rachel
