With numerous Great Gatsby inspired parties this summer, I can imagine many people will be donning flapper dresses and dusting off their cocktail shakers.

This is favourite summer drink of mine, and it packs rather a punch! If you prefer a lighter version, Lillet mixed with soda water or fizzy lemonade is a very pleasant alternative. For those wishing to party like a Bright Young Thing, give this cocktail a go:

Lillet Martini

1 1/4 cups vodka

1/4 cup Lillet Blanc

2 large strips (2 inches wide) orange zest

2 thin strips orange zest for garnish

The day before you think you may need some strong martinis, mix the vodka and Lillet and pour into a freezer container. Add the 2 large strips of orange zest. Freeze covered for at least 12 hours. When ready to serve, remove the orange zest from the martini and pour into 2 chilled martini glasses. Garnish with the thin strips of orange.

Makes 2 strong martinis.

You can also easily double / triple up on ingredients to have a cocktail jug waiting for your guests (remember to have a jug of iced water too, to keep your friends well hydrated!).  – Miranda
