On our way from the V&A to Kensington Gardens at the weekend, my friend and I happened across the Royal Geographical Society, which is currently holding a free exhibition of photographs depicting the first successful ascent of Everest. It’s a small but perfectly formed selection of images that are both a fascinating evocation of the realities of such a feat of physical endurance and an intriguing insight into the cultural and technological¬†context of the 1950s. It’s well worth a stop if you’re in the area, but if you’re not, you can read all about it here. – Rachel
