While in Sussex over the last couple of days, our focus was largely on visting sites with a Bloomsbury connection. Charleston, Monk’s House and Berwick Church were all marvellous, but what most inspired me was our sneaky drive up a farm track that ran beneath the Downs to Furlongs, a cottage where my favourite modern painter Eric Ravilious used to stay. Some of his most entrancing paintings are of the view from this house, and I was awe struck at seeing the familiar scenes from his work come alive in front of me. The landscape here is so unchanged that I almost believed he could still be sitting there, painting somewhere in the distance. – Rachel
