On Saturday I watched Winter’s Bone. Shot on location in the Osarks, it had a bleached, bleak beauty that I found almost hypnotising. Most of the cast are locals, not actors; this realism gave the already weighty content an even mightier punch. Jennifer Lawrence, obviously, is magnificent; I secretly want her to be my best friend so that we can get drunk and fall up stairs together. You should watch it; it’s not a feel good movie by any means, but it’s an excellent example of an involving, human story, simply and powerfully told. I’m hoping the novel will be just as brilliant. – Rachel
